Fence Cleaning: Wood, Vinyl, Composite & Metal

Wood fences are porous and trap organic material, making them highly susceptible to mold, mildew, and gray weathering. Over time, untreated wood darkens and can develop surface rot.

Method: Low-pressure washing (under 800 PSI) with a mildewcidal cleaning solution. The wood is typically brightened afterward to restore natural color and open the grain — especially important before applying sealant or stain.

⚠️ High pressure damages wood grain and causes splintering. Never use a rotating turbo nozzle on wood fencing.

Vinyl fencing is durable and relatively low-maintenance, but it is not self-cleaning. Algae, mold, and mineral deposits from irrigation water create a green or chalky film that doesn't rinse away with rain.

Method: Soft washing with a mild sodium hypochlorite solution removes biological growth completely. The low pressure prevents warping or cracking of PVC panels and posts.

⚠️ Avoid high-pressure washing on vinyl — even consumer-grade washers can crack, warp, or discolor white vinyl panels.

Composite materials (recycled wood/plastic) resist rot but accumulate surface mold and staining. The surface texture can trap dirt and organic debris.

Method: Similar to composite decking — moderate pressure (1,000–1,500 PSI) with a fan tip and mild detergent. Chemical solutions must be pH-safe for composite materials.

⚠️ Check manufacturer specs before cleaning — some composite fence products have coating warranties that may be voided by certain chemicals.

Metal fences collect dust, air pollution, and surface oxidation. Wrought iron in older Bay Area neighborhoods is particularly susceptible to rust.

Method: Medium-pressure washing (1,500–2,000 PSI) with rust-inhibiting detergents. Rust stains on surrounding concrete are treated with oxalic acid. Bare metal should be sealed or painted promptly after cleaning to prevent rapid re-oxidation.

⚠️ Avoid concentrated acids on aluminum — they can etch and pit the surface permanently.
