Those dark streaks running down your roof aren't simply dirt or age — they're a living organism called Gloeocapsa Magma, a cyanobacteria (blue-green algae) that feeds on the limestone filler used in asphalt shingles.
The bacteria arrives via airborne spores and takes hold in areas that stay moist — typically the north-facing sections of your roof, shaded valleys, and areas beneath overhanging trees. Once established, it spreads aggressively, producing a dark, protective outer coating (which is what you see as the black streak) that shields the colony from UV damage.
Beyond aesthetics, Gloeocapsa Magma actively deteriorates your shingles by consuming the limestone granule binder. A roof showing heavy black staining may have years — not decades — taken from its lifespan.
The solution: Soft washing with a sodium hypochlorite-based solution kills the organism at its root. The dark staining fades over subsequent rainfalls as the dead cells wash away. Rain itself will not remove live colonies — only chemical treatment does.

Surrounding landscaping, gutters, and driveways are wet down to protect plants and prevent runoff staining.
02
Our proprietary biocide blend is applied from the ground at ultra-low pressure, thoroughly saturating the roof surface.
03
The solution is allowed to dwell for 10–20 minutes, penetrating the algae colonies and neutralizing the organisms.
04
The roof is rinsed thoroughly at garden-hose pressure. Dark staining fades over the next few rain cycles as dead cells wash away.
The most common Bay Area roofing material. Never use high pressure — it strips granules and voids manufacturer warranties. Soft washing with a low-pressure surfactant is the ARMA (Asphalt Roofing Manufacturers Association) recommended method.
Common in San Jose and Saratoga. Tile is durable but the grout lines and valleys trap moisture, creating algae highways. Low-pressure soft washing is safe and effective. Never walk on aged clay tile.
Standing seam and metal shingles are increasingly popular in modern South Bay homes. Can be soft washed safely. Avoid harsh acids that can strip coatings. Results last longest of all roof types.
Less common but present in older Los Gatos and Saratoga homes. Requires careful low-pressure washing and specialized solutions to avoid fiber damage. Annual moss prevention treatments recommended.
✗ MYTH: "High pressure is the only way to clean a roof."
✓ TRUTH: False. High pressure strips granules from shingles and is explicitly prohibited by most major shingle manufacturers. The ARMA recommends low-pressure soft washing.
✗ MYTH: "Black streaks are just dirt."
✓ TRUTH: False. They're Gloeocapsa Magma, a living cyanobacteria that feeds on the limestone filler in shingles. It continues spreading until chemically treated.
✗ MYTH: "A clean roof doesn't affect home value."
✓ TRUTH: False. Appraisers and buyers often mistake algae staining for roof damage or age. A clean roof can add thousands to perceived value and prevent unnecessary replacement.
✗ MYTH: "You should wait until the roof is really bad before cleaning."
✓ TRUTH: False. Early-stage algae is far easier and cheaper to remove than a heavily colonized roof. Prevention is always more cost-effective than remediation.
